These shocking images show the aftermath of a crash on the M58 which left a woman with serious injuries.
The motorway was shut eastbound between junction five for Up Holland and junction 26 of the M6, Orrell Interchange, following the smash, which involved a lorry and a car.
Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the scene on Monday morning.
Two women were taken by road ambulance to Aintree University Hospital.
An ambulance spokeswoman said one woman was left with serious injuries.
She said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.
“We sent two ambulances, one of our senior clinicians and the air ambulance to the scene.
“We have taken two patients to Aintree University Hospital by road ambulance.
“Both patients are female, one is seriously injured.”
A statement from Highways England read: “The M58 in Lancashire is closed eastbound between J5 (A577) and the M6 (Chain Bar) due to a serious traffic collision. North West Motorway Police Group are on scene, and air ambulance have also been in attendance.
“Traffic is being diverted via the ‘Hollow Circle’ diversion route, using the A577 from J5 to join the M6 at J26.”
